AN INTRODUCTION TO & REVIEW OF NEW SINGLE – PEACH FAITH

Cult Icon are a five piece band from Birkenhead consisting of Jim Candlish (Lead Vocals), James ‘Peach’ Caul (Drummer), Tom Byron O’Shea (Guitar), Lee Barry (Guitar) and James Taaffe (Bass) who comically describe themselves in their Facebook bio as they are ‘5 lads from the wrong side of the Mersey’. They are emerging from the streets of Birkenhead through the perpetual darkness of the year that has been 2020, and breathing life into a resurgent Wirral music scene in 2021. Cult Icon bring us a taste of the alt-rock/moody blue’s that bring along favourable comparisons to the likes of the Black Keys with their new single ‘Peach Faith’ (an ode to Cult’s fantastic drummer James ‘The Peach’ Caul perhaps?)

Cult Icon’s lead singer Jim Candlish has said that he is in his element in this band as its allowed him to have the creative freedom to write and perform his own music for the first time. Very much entrenched in the local music scene Jim describes his musical roots as being as such by saying; “there’s an incredible amount to be said about local musicians who inspired me to actually get up and try something new. Up and coming Dr Orange, Aimee Stevens and the phenomenal Queen Zee who sadly disbanded in 2019”.

Bass player James Taaffe started playing bass age 16 and has been in a few bands prior to Cult Icon, one being ‘Slide’ whose members also included Lee Barry. Like James, Lee had also been in a few bands before and it’s these experiences which has resulted in bringing together Cult Icon.

James ‘Peach’ Caul started playing guitar first but after losing interest took up the drums age 15, he lists his influences from legends such as Fleetwood Mac and newer artists including Tea Street Band and Blossoms.

Following on from their last single ‘Cold Street Shade’ Cult Icon released their latest single “Peach Icon”on the 22nd January 2021. Its a familiar and satisfying return for them and forms a gratifying experience that hits you from the onset and leaves you craving more by the end.

It’s an upbeat joyful track with its pop-esque drum beats and guitar rhythms that maintain throughout. It’s certainly a track that starts out as it means to go on. From those first opening beats we’re tapping our toes and by the time the vocals kick in we’re hooked. It’s a nod to nostalgic indie rock putting us in mind of some of the greats of the genre such as Kasabian, The Killers and The Black Keys.
